Description:

On September 18, 2003 at 09:17 (EDT) the National Response Center received a report from Marine Safety Office San Juan of a freight vessel, M/V Kent Reliant, which ran aground in San Juan Harbor near San Juan, Puerto Rico. The incident occurred at 05:00 (EDT) of the same day but the cause of the grounding is unknown at this time. The M/V Kent Reliant is a double-bottomed freight vessel which is estimated to be carrying 8,864 metric tons of IFO 180 (approximately 2,600,000 gallons) However, no internal or external leaks have been reported at this time. Representatives from Marine Safety Office San Juan are on-scene and an investigation is underway. Plans are in effect to lighter the vessel with the hope of refloating it at high tide. There were no injuries or evacuations reported. MSO San Juan is the FOSC. CASE CLOSED.
